What Is A Transmission Transfer Case?
The transfer case is the center point of the drivetrain in all four-wheel and some all-wheel-drive cars. The function of the transmission case is to split power being delivered by the engine to the front and rear axles of your car. The transmission transfer case is also responsible for managing the rotation of the front and rear wheels. Low range gears located in the transfer case allow off-road vehicles to dry at much slower than normal speeds, a necessity when negotiating rocky terrain.
In some four-wheel drive vehicles that are specifically designed for off-roading, the driver can actually manually control the function of the transfer case. This helps the driver toggle from two-wheel to four-wheel drive when necessary.
Types Of Transmission Cases Include:
FULL-TIME FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
ACTIVE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
PART-TIME FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
Depending on whether you plan to take your vehicle off-road or not, different vehicles will require different transfer cases. If you’re unsure which type of transfer case is right for you, come into our shop and one of our knowledgeable technicians will discuss your options with you.
For vehicles that already have a transfer case, you should include periodic inspections of your case in your truck’s regular maintenance routine. If you suspect that there’s a problem with your transfer case, you will want to bring it into our shop right away. We can help you catch a small problem before it turns into a large, costly one.
Transmission Case Repair and Care
If your vehicle has a transmission case, it is always working whether you are actively utilizing four-wheel drive or not. To keep your transfer case in good working order, there is some periodic maintenance that must be performed. It is recommended that you have the fluid level of your transfer case inspected regularly. You can have this done whenever you have an oil change done on your car. At the same time, you will want your trusted transmission professional to inspect your transfer case for any concerning signs of wear. Occasionally, transfer cases do get damaged which could lead to fluid leaks. If a leak is found, it will need to be repaired right away before bigger problems ensue.
Like all other systems in your car, prevention is the best medicine when it comes to maintaining your transfer case. By taking care to check on the health of your transfer case regularly, you can minimize your chances of something going wrong when you’re out on the road.
